About the Learning Commons:
The Idea of a Learning Commons
The Learning Commons (Information Commons) is a new service model emerging in academic libraries. Its aim is to provide in a single location, the academic support services that will enable students to fully research, explore, enhance, produce and complete academic work assignments e.g. computer workstations, licensed databases, academic software, collaborative work spaces, study spaces, research materials, research assistance, and tutoring assistance. Partnerships between the library and other academic support services in the university community generally play an important role in the success of a learning commons.
Currently Level 1 of the Babbidge Library offers many of the services of a learning commons: a microcomputer lab with university licensed software, information cafes, a research service, an Undergraduate Research Classroom, a Learning Resource Center, and Writing and Q Center tutoring services. However, the entire suite of services and services layout has not been reviewed holistically since the 1996-98 renovation.
Learning Commons Project Team
The Learning Commons Project Team started meeting in May of 2006 to research the possiblities on the Storrs campus. Several Team members have met with faculty and staff members at the regional campuses. The Team will submit its final report to the Vice-Provosts of the University Libraries and Undergraduate Education.
